Food Trucks rocks Port Elizabeth

Friday 18th November saw Port Elizabeth host its first ever Baakens Food Truck Friday. An event organised and run by the local food trucks and trailer owners. As no official attendance was recorded an estimated 3000 revellers descended on Baakens River Valley to get their fill of food, fun and entertainment. According to event organiser Grant Foong the attendance might be north of 3500 which for a first event is mind blowing.

This would be the first time only food trucks and trailers would be used to anchor an event and the bay foodies loved the concept. Food ranged from burgers to Asian to vegetarian with some waffles, slush puppies and pancakes sprinkled between. As the sun set a Carnival atmosphere was created by the extra street lighting provided by the WERK manufacturing guys.

The big turnout did create big ques and some people had to wait a quite a while for food, however speaking to event organiser Grant Foong this will be addressed for the next event which will be held on the 23th December. More food vendors or trailers will be brought in as well as some more entertainment and a few surprises. The first event is always a learning curve and feedback from the public through social media has been excellent.

The current ensemble of food vendors are Foongs Asian Street Food, Street Cred Chef, Masterton coffee, Wafelbak, Makoys, Groundfloor, Chai health food co, Gourmet girl, Fusion, Slush Puppy and Munch box. Activities included were Peddle go carts, Face Painting, Henna artists and Balloon makers. Musical artists skulla, Emile Naidu and Le Prezident kept crowds entertained while Fratelli's and Richmond Hill Brewing Company provided some lubrication for the grownups. Redbull also provided some much needed energy.

As for the next event a few extra touches will be added said Foong, who did not want to elaborates too much on these extras but assured me it will another epic event and hopefully attendance will be similar.

It looks like the food truck scene has finally arrived in the bay and it’s about time, however only time will tell if these foodies can keep the energy going. As for this foodie I sincerely hope they can.

Next Baakens Food truck Friday is scheduled for the 23th December. Clear your schedule, it’s going to be awesome!
